SAFETY TIPS FOR RUNNING IN THE DARK

Posted 11/12/2015 | 1022 views

Running in the dark can be fun and, as the days get shorter, necessary. But it can also be more dangerous. Here are a few tips for running in the dark.

  • Stay Left: The correct place to run is on the left side of the road, facing traffic. It might seem counterintuitive, but it’s easier for you to get out of the way of a car if you see it coming at you. This is true in daytime running, too.
  • Lose the Headphones: When running in the dark, you need all your senses to really know what’s going on around you, including any potential dangers. Ditch the tunes and be aware.
  • Run in Well-Lit &/or Populated Areas: If you’re a trail runner, you might want to hit the roads in the dark. Trails can be dark and secluded, which sounds peaceful, but it might make you more vulnerable.
  • Run With a Friend: Running with a buddy reduces the chance of someone accosting you and increases the chance of you being seen in traffic. An extra set of eyes and ears, plus an extra body with lights and reflectivity, are always helpful. And the extra motivation is not bad either.
  • Carry A Phone: It’s always a good idea to carry a phone when you run, just in case.
  • Be Reflective: Wear reflective gear -- not just the random stripe on a shirt or pants -- but a full vest or a jacket that really lights up when car headlights shine on it. Reflective gear increases the distance from which drivers can see you to 500 feet, as opposed to just 180 feet if you’re only wearing bright, neon or white clothing. Bear in mind, it takes 180 feet for a driver to come to a stop if he/she is moving at 40 mph.
  • Light It Up: Wear a head lamp or carry a light. It will not only help you see what’s in front of you, but it will help drivers see you.
  • Be Flashy: You are far more likely to be seen by drivers if you wear multiple points of light on your back and front. Also, studies show flashing lights are more eye-catching than solid lights, so hit that strobe.
